A hand-tufted rug is made with a special artisanal technique whereby an operator manually uses a tufting hook or gun to follow a design previously traced on a base canvas. Thanks to the use of a special tool, designed specifically for creating rugs, the production process is much faster than the one involved in making hand-knotted rugs.
This type of rug has a fabric backing that covers a layer of glue used to hold the pile threads in place after they have been "shot" into the canvas. Consequently, you cannot see the pattern on the back of the rug.
Usually, the design of the rug being created is drawn or printed on the back of the canvas. This tracing acts as a guide for the craftsperson who has the task of tufting the rug. If a tufting gun is used, the process is almost completely automated: the gun just needs to be loaded with the coloured yarn as required. In this way, by firing the gun over the various coloured sections, the pattern on the carpet is quickly produced.
The strong point of this type of rug is the quality in pattern definition (great for contract projects).
Where to put it?
When choosing the best place for this type of rug it is important to understand that the rug canvas is glued to a backing fabric, making it less durable than a hand-knotted rug.
High footfall areas of the house, such as the entrance, living rooms, halls and landings should, of course, be avoided. Bearing in mind that tufted rugs are often soft to the touch, they are ideal for bedrooms and walk-in closets.
A tufted rug is often chosen to furnish an environment where an added touch of colour is needed.
Finally, when thinking about purchasing a tufted rug, always remember that this type of rug requires constant maintenance.
