Rugs are very important furnishing accessories: they can make your home look more welcoming and comfortable, enhancing the decor.
They are usually purchased right after furniture arrangement, and they should match your home decor style. Current interior design trends have been leaning towards minimalism and clean lines that perfectly match with modern rugs.
When you’re choosing a modern rug you should consider aesthetics, functionality and quality.
Before investing in a modern rug you should be informed about all the different rug types and their main characteristics:
1. Hand-knotted rugs
Hand-knotting is an ancient art that has been handed down from generation to generation in Iran, India and Turkey.
The value of a hand-knotted rug is determined by knot count: in a good quality rug you can count about 100.000/150.000 knots per square meter.
These rugs are manufactured with wool fibers dyed with natural pigments.
2. Kilims
These flat-woven tapestry rugs or mats are very different from pile rugs; they are very durable, and are usually manufactured with wool fibers dyed with natural pigments.
Kilims are very easy to clean and take care of; sometimes their double-face weave is reversible.
3.Hand-tufted rugs
Tufting is a very common manufacturing technique, by which craftsmen create the rug’s design shooting strips of yarn (tufts) with a hand tufting gun into a stenciled backing cotton fabric.
Thanks to this technique, craftsmen can manufacture rugs in any size and rather quickly. Modern hand-tufted rugs are usually 15 mm thick, or more.
4. Machine-made rugs
Machine-made rugs are currently the most common type of modern rugs; they are certainly affordable, but their quality can be very low. They are usually made with synthetic fibers dyed with artificial pigments, and the loom is electrically automated and controlled by computers. Machine-made rugs are easy to recognize: their pile is not very soft to the touch, and they are very stiff to fold.
The value of handmade modern rugs is beyond compare, and it lies in their artisan quality, history and tradition. They are handcrafted using high quality natural fibers, and they are beautiful, soft and durable: an investment of such great value will last a lifetime!
Also, the natural fibers and pigments used in handmade modern rugs are safe, sustainable end environment-friendly.
